Medium
Painting - Encaustic (wax)
Description
Burnished Pears with Vase is a painting done in wax. It is called Encaustic and it means to "burn in". It is an ancient form of painting rendered in molten wax, resin, and color pigment. Unlike other mediums, it will never fade or lose its intensity. The wax is applied with a brush and then each layer is fused with the one beneath it with heat from a blow torch or heat gun. The famous Egyptian Fayum funeral portrait, End of the Reign of Trajan 98-117 A.D. is made of wax on wood, a testament to the durability of encaustic painting.
